This week we are exploring BEDMAS, which helps us to understand the order of operations when we are solving problems. BEDMAS stands for: B rackets E xponents D ivision M ultiplication A ddition S ubtraction Use BEDMASto solve the problems below! Only scroll to the second page when you are ready to mark. Last week we learnt how to use addition algorithms to solve addition problems. This week, we are learning to use subtraction algorithms to solve subtraction problems. For this weeks activity, copy the questions into your maths books and solve. Remember, you may need to carry some tens across to the next column. Don't scroll down too far - the answers are for marking when you are all finished! This week we are learning how we can use algorithms to solve addition problems. Believe it or not, algorithms are the only strategy I remember being taught at school! They can be helpful to understand place value but aren't very handy when you don't have a pen and paper! For Thursday's activity, copy the questions into your maths books and solve. Remember, you may need to carry some tens across to the next column. This week we have been working on our understanding of Place Value. We have been given numbers that are in the millions and our challenges have been to name the number, state the value of the different places and explain which number is in which column. Here is an example of a number in the millions - can you say which number it is? Write a comment below about how you got on with place value this week.
You could tell us how you felt about Place Value at the start of the week, how you are finding it now, what learning you have developed, whether you have mastered it or whether you need more time! Monday - Combinations This week we build upon our ability to predict outcomes and look at the combination of different events occuring. Copy the following clothing items into your books and try to work out how many possible outfits you could wear on camp. Have you discovered an easier way to work out the different combinations? Tuesday - Tree Diagrams Tree diagrams are another way to show the combination of different possible outcomes. Check out this website to see how tree diagrams work: https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/probability-tree-diagrams.html What do you think the following tree diagram shows? |
