Alright team. You have been working really hard this past week on your inquiry. Tomorrow is your presentation day to small groups. I want you to think about the following today as you are finishing off:
1- What is my oral language goal? 2- How will I get my message across clearly and effectively? 3- Can I explain this to an alien? Have a go! Tomorrow you will be presenting. Here are some reflective questions for you to answer after you have presented: REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS: 1- Did I achieve my oral language goal? How do I know this? 2- What am I most proud of? 3- What will I do differently next time? 4- What did I discover when I did my inquiry? Explain it to an alien! WELL DONE everyone!

Wow! Miss Buttle and I have been so impressed with your thinking and development of your maths applications. We are looking forward to your application presentations today. I wonder what you will learn once you have been taught by your peers?
SESSION 1: MATHS APPLICATIONS- YAY! SESSION 2: Today Miss Jones is taking the Year 5s to do the TIMSS so Miss Buttle will be helping you out. To begin as a class, have a think about the Positives (P), Minus (M) and Interesting things (I) about your maths applications. Share your ideas with everyone. This will help us to improve in our next applications. Then have a go at the reflections below. ACTIVITY 1: Reflective Questions: please answer in the blog below: What are you most proud of? Why? What challenges did you face and how did you solve them? How did you encourage your students to get involved in the lesson? Do you think you explained the strategy effectively? Why/ Why not? What will you do differently next time? ACTIVITY 2: Mathletics- Algebra Activities SESSION 3: Mini Maths Inquiry: BIG question- What are the relationships and patterns between "powers" and "square roots"? Today you will be conducting a mini maths inquiry based on this BIG question. I have sent out a google doc to your Maths folders in Hapara. Please use this document to record your information as it has supporting questions that I would like you to explore. The questions are: What is a "power"? What is a "square root"? What are the similarities? What are the differences? What patterns can you see? How are they connected? How can you describe this to an alien? Remember to copy and paste the link that you are using into the document so that I can see where you are getting your information. Here are a few sites you might like to start with: http://www.mathsisfun.com/square-root.html https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-eighth-grade-math/cc-8th-numbers-operations/cc-8th-roots/v/understanding-square-roots http://www.mathsisfun.com/exponent.html http://www.purplemath.com/modules/exponent.htm http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/exponent-laws.html Hi everyone. I have been so impressed with how hard you have all been working and the amazing strategies that you have come up with. At the end of last week, we came up with a little recipe to remind us what we need to do and the order that we need to do it in. Check this out and see if you remember: 1- Find the pattern and rule 2- Create an equation 3- Test the equation Great thinking. This week we are going to extend this a little by looking at equations differently. We will need to find the missing number which will be replaced with a letter or symbol (variables). Let's get cracking! SESSION 1: After seeing Miss Jones today, have a go at the following activity. Now, this is a little different. This time, instead of using numbers, you will be looking at symbols. Have a think about if you can use the same strategies and if symbols are the same as letters. The answers are below, so Act with Integrity and don't look until you have finished. Make sure you record your thinking to show Miss Jones in your next session with her. Think about how you would like to record your thinking. If using "Explain Everything" perhaps take a photo of the activity, set it as a background, then write your answers and thinking over the top- give it a go for something new! If you finish this, have a go at your mathletics activities! SESSION 2: Today we are looking at "Balancing Equations" and finding the unknown number. This means that we have to find what one side equals, to find out what is missing on the other side of the equals sign (=). For example, 2 + 6 = ? + 5. To solve this problem we need to make both sides equal the same. We know that 2 + 6 = 8. So, now we have to make ? + 5 = 8. Therefore our missing number is 3, because 3 + 5 = 8. If we put it all back together in the original equation, it would look like this: 2 + 6 = 3 + 5. Have a go at the following. Remember to Act with Integrity as the answers are below. Then do your WEEKLY REFLECTIONS BELOW. WEEKLY REFLECTIONS
Alright team, great work this week! Now have a go at the following questions to think back on your journey this week: 1- What is the difference between using a symbol or a letter in an equation? 2- Explain how to balance an equation. 3- How do you feel about this strategy? ("Good" is not an answer. Please explain) 4- Could you teach this strategy to someone else, or do you need a little more time? Welcome to week 3 Algebra. Firstly, thanks for your reflections everyone. It sounds like you are really grasping algebra with confidence. Great efforts, keep it up. This week we have to put our thinking caps on yet again. There will be a lot of discussion required to figure out the correct answers, so get ready to collaborate with a buddy or small group. Think about the types of questions you can ask to ensure you are on the right track. Question your buddy's ideas by asking these questions: 1- What are you thinking? 2- How do you know this? 3- How can we test your idea? 4- Is there anything we need to change about our thinking? GET READY, GET SET, GO! SESSION 1: Alrighty, so you have just been "preparing for a hangi" with Mrs Quinn and had a wee chat about why it is so important to read the problems carefully to make sure you have all the information. Sometimes, it even helps to jot some points down, all those fabulous key words! Now, have a go at the following activity with a thinking buddy or small group. You can record your ideas however you like; on your device using an app of choice that fits the purpose, a whiteboard table and camera, or your maths book. Remember Miss Buttle is there to help you also- or, once you have the answers, challenge Miss Buttle's thinking and see if she can figure it out too! SESSION 2: All this talk about food is making me hungry! And, maybe it's because we have been "frying" our brains with all our awesome thinking! Have a crack at the problem below. Think about identifying what you need to do first; read the problem carefully, think about the key words, then ask yourselves, "What strategies could we use here? Or, what is the best way to try a solve this?" Remember, working collaboratively in a team will generate more ideas, and as we know, 3 heads is better than one! Good luck! Once you are done, scroll down to the reflective questions below... REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS:
Pick one problem you have tackled this week, your favourite if you like. Then answer the following questions on the blog about it: 1- How did you and your team work it out? 2- How did you check your thinking to see if it was correct? 3- Did you find any mistakes? How did you fix them? 4- What "team work" skills did you use to make sure you were all co-operating in your team? Hi Everyone. First off, I would like to say thank you for your awesome reflections at the end of last week. Make sure you go back and read my comments that I added at the bottom. One of the suggestions that I loved was the idea of having a page attached to the Marvellous Mathematicians page. Great thinking, I'm hoping this will make it easier for you to find your modelling books and activities. Let me know how it goes. This week we only have two sessions of numeracy as we have gymnastics and athletics day, so let's make the most of it and hit the ground running. Let's go! SESSION 1: After investigating algebra problems and patterns with me, have a go at this practice activity. For this activity you will need sticks and blocks, like we used last week. Please work in groups of 2-3 and discuss your different ideas and strategies. Please take a photo of your thinking on a whiteboard surface, or a photo of the patterns you create with the sticks. Be ready to discuss your ideas with Miss Jones. Enjoy! SESSION 2: Today we will be looking at different patterns for algebra using shapes and tiles. For this activity, you will need 2D shape tiles. Please work in groups like you did yesterday and be ready to discuss your ideas with Miss Jones. Remember to take a photo or bring evidence along to our whole group discussion next. After you have collaborated in a group, complete your weekly learning reflections below. These were fabulous last week and I can't wait to read them again. Great job everyone! WEEKLY REFLECTIONS:
1- Alrightly, last week you asked me to create separate pages to help you navigate around the weebly. How did this help you this week and was it easier? 2- This week you looked at different patterns using tiles, shapes, sticks. What was your favourite strategy when it came to finding the patterns? Explain. 3- How do you feel about finding the patterns? ("good" is not an answer) 4- Do you feel confident with finding a rule for a pattern? Explain |
